About Me
I'm a midwife, but also an expecting mother, so I figured this would be a good and interesting perspective. It's definitely a little weird "on the other side" and hasn't been what I would have expected (pun fully intended) so far.
Personal history
Born in raised in Wisconsin, I now live in Brooklyn, New York with my husband, Fred and two cats, Penny and Harry. Fred and I have been together since 2008 and married in 2011. Over the years our ideas about potential parenthood have changed significantly. In the beginning, we thought we wanted three kids. Then for awhile, we thought maybe none. Finally we both decided one sounded like a good plan.
We bought our house in September 2017. It has a lot of renovations we need to do, but it's spacious. What better time to have a kid! We significantly increased our space and now seemed good. We set out to trying which took a whopping two months, despite some irregular cycles. Needless to say, we were happy, but surprised.
As for hobbies, likes, etc: I'm an avid exerciser, this is definitely my biggest hobby. I have a membership to Beachbody on Demand, which is extremely awesome, especially when you don't want to leave home. I love the MMA workouts, strength training, cardio, etc. It's a great subscription and I'll probably talk about it pretty regularly on the blog. I also like running and swimming and dabble in yoga (but I consider this not so much exercise as a strength (maybe) or stretching.
I also love to travel (especially with my husband). We have seen many places together and touched five continents together. I like cats, dogs (especially pit bulls) and goats. I am a homebody, but enjoy hanging out with my close friends.
Unlike many midwives (or popular belief about them) I do not knit, crochet or sew or do much in the form of artsy projects.
Midwifery History
Since 2001, I was pretty sure I wanted to be a midwife. I took the long road to getting there by first getting a bachelor's degree, then a nursing degree and finally the advanced nursing midwifery degree. Three schools, degrees and states later, I became a midwife in 2010. I worked with a physician practice for the first 3 years, then to my current private practice setting in 2014. I work with two other fantastic midwives (who are also my midwives). We love what we do.
For years I've been telling myself to enjoy this time in my career, when I'm in the same cohort as the clients I serve. It really is a cool time to meet couples who are the same age and think, "we could be friends". I know this time will not last forever, so I'm trying to cherish this time. Lately, the newest feelings are meeting clients who are around the same gestational age as I am. I'm still not sharing the news of my pregnancy with them, but the secret won't last for long.
